F-4016 leaves T-MAX 100’s small-tank XTOL 1:1 cell blank at 72°F
Shows that Kodak F-4016 for T-MAX 100 prints a small-tank XTOL 1:1 row with times at 65, 68, 70 and 75°F but an unpublished em dash at 72°F (22°C) in the June 2018, February 2016 and October 2007 sheets, while the same F-4016 sheet fills 72°F for tray and rotary XTOL 1:1, sister sheet F-4043 fills the matching small-tank cell for T-MAX 400, and developer sheet J-109 omits a 72°F small-tank column entirely — so a quoted 72°F small-tank XTOL 1:1 time for T-MAX 100 cannot come from these Kodak tables.
Kodak publication F-4016 for T-MAX 100 prints five temperature columns on its small-tank development table: 65, 68, 70, 72 and 75°F (18, 20, 21, 22 and 24°C). For XTOL diluted 1:1, four of those cells carry times. The 72°F cell is an em dash.
That blank is not marked NR, is not explained by the page’s dilution or short-time footnotes, and is stable across the June 2018 manufacturer sheet, the February 2016 manufacturer sheet, and an October 2007 third-party mirror of the combined T-MAX Films F-4016. Sister film sheet F-4043 for T-MAX 400 fills the matching small-tank cell. Developer sheet J-109 never offers a 72°F small-tank column that could supply the missing figure. This article compares that gap. It is not a development recipe, and it does not invent a time by interpolation.
The blank cell
On page 3 of F-4016 June 2018, under Small Tank Processing, (8- or 16-ounce tank)—Rolls, the XTOL (1:1) row reads:

The same five-cell pattern — four times and a dash at 72°F — appears in the February 2016 F-4016 hosted on a Kodak Moments business domain and in the October 2007 combined T-MAX Films F-4016 third-party mirror at 125px.com. The 2007 file is not manufacturer-hosted; it is cited only as dated evidence that the blank predates the later single-product sheets.
The page defines NR as “Not Recommended.” The 72°F XTOL 1:1 cell is not NR. It is the same em-dash glyph the table uses for cells that simply carry no time, as on the dilute T-MAX and T-MAX RS rows that publish only a 75°F figure. Footnote † on the XTOL (1:1) row warns against more dilute solutions than those shown; it does not explain a missing intermediate temperature. Footnote ‡ marks times shorter than five minutes for uniformity risk; the blank cell is not a short-time warning.
Stock XTOL on the same small-tank table publishes all five temperatures, including 6 minutes at 72°F. The omission is specific to the 1:1 row.
Same sheet, other methods publish 72°F
Within F-4016 June 2018, XTOL 1:1 is not globally unpublished at 72°F:

The tray and rotary figures show that Kodak did print 72°F XTOL 1:1 times for T-MAX 100 under other agitation regimes in the same publication. They do not fill the small-tank cell. The rotary roll/sheet split at that temperature is treated in Two XTOL 1:1 rotary times in Kodak F-4016; here it matters only as proof that a 72°F rotary figure exists while the small-tank figure does not.
Large-tank omission is a different silence again: those tables never list an XTOL 1:1 row for rolls or sheets, so they cannot be read as supplying the missing small-tank number.
Sister sheet F-4043 fills the cell
F-4043 for T-MAX 400, February 2016, uses the same small-tank temperature columns. Its XTOL (1:1) row is complete:

The October 2007 combined F-4016 already places the two products’ small-tank tables side by side: T-MAX 100 carries the blank at 72°F; T-MAX 400 carries published times at that temperature (with a further 135/120 split on that older combined layout). The blank is therefore product-specific inside Kodak’s own T-MAX paperwork, not a general refusal to publish 72°F for XTOL 1:1.
F-4043’s 7¾-minute cell is a T-MAX 400 figure. It is not a substitute time for T-MAX 100.
J-109 cannot fill the gap
F-4016 June 2018 points to publication J-109 for detailed XTOL processing instructions. The February 2018 Kodak Professional J-109 Table 1: Processing Roll Films in Small Tanks does not use the same temperature grid. Full-strength columns are 65, 68, 70, 75 and 80°F. The 1:1 columns are 68, 70, 75 and 80°F. There is no 72°F (22°C) column on either side of that small-tank table.
For T-MAX 100 Film / 100TMX at EI 100/200 and CI 0.56, J-109 does publish 1:1 times at 68, 70, 75 and 80°F (9½, 8½, 6½ and 5 minutes). Those overlapping temperatures match F-4016’s published small-tank 1:1 cells at 68, 70 and 75°F. They still leave 72°F unpublished, because J-109 never opens that column for small-tank work.
Deferral to J-109 therefore does not repair the F-4016 blank. The developer sheet’s small-tank grid simply does not contain the missing cell. J-109’s 1:1 path is single-use outside the reuse ladder; see Kodak XTOL “adjusted” 15% makes the total increase 32.25%.
What a citation has to carry
Anyone quoting “the” 72°F small-tank XTOL 1:1 time for T-MAX 100 from these Kodak tables is quoting a cell the film sheet leaves empty and the developer sheet does not provide. The usable statement is negative and scoped: in F-4016 June 2018, February 2016 and the October 2007 third-party mirror, that small-tank cell is unpublished; tray and rotary paths on F-4016 do publish 72°F figures for other methods; F-4043 publishes a filled small-tank cell only for T-MAX 400; J-109 February 2018 omits a 72°F small-tank column.
No sheet in the sources examined here marks the blank as an error, supplies a later correction of that cell, or states a rule for deriving it from neighbouring temperatures. Filling the dash by interpolation, by borrowing F-4043’s T-MAX 400 figure, or by treating a tray or rotary time as a small-tank time, goes past the documents.
